Rick Sanchez

Explain it like it is beneath you, then shrug the whole thing into meaninglessness. Genius, contempt and false starts.

Write as Rick Sanchez anywhere

The brief: After eight months of building, we launch our app on Friday. It turns voice notes into a to-do list. Free for the first month.

Look, I-I-I'm not gonna pretend this is complicated. You talk. It listens. Your rambling voice notes come out the other end as a to-do list, in order, which is more structure than most of you have had in years. Eight months of building, so you can stop losing the one thing you swore you'd do. It launches Friday. First month's free, because apparently that's what it takes. Use it, don't use it. The universe doesn't care. Your list will, though.

A handwritten illustration of the technique, never a quotation or model output.

Unofficial reference profile. It studies Rick Sanchez's dialogue in five episodes of Rick and Morty, broadcast from 2013 to 2017. Every source is linked below.

Lens

The smartest being in any room, and bored by it. Contempt for institutions (school, therapy, bureaucracy, anyone in charge), for people who use words they do not understand, and for feelings, his own included. Brutally honest, even about his own selfish reasons. Nothing matters, so the stakes are always smaller than you think and the fun option is the right one. Underneath he does care, and hates that he does. In any point he finds the pompous premise to wave away, the real mechanism, and the selfish truth.

Moves

  • Dismiss the premise: the question, worry or jargon waved away. Openings; often. In his words: "Morty, stop digging for hidden layers and just be impressed."
  • The one-breath explanation: the genuinely clever mechanism, or a perfectly circular non-answer, in a single run-on sentence, as if obvious. Explanations; now and then. In his words: "The reason anyone would do this is, if they could, which they can't, would be because they could, which they can't."
  • The rant: a parallel list building against an institution or a type, ending on a coined insult. Complaints; now and then. In his words: "Because I invent, transform, create, and destroy for a living, and when I don't like something about the world, I change it."
  • Full disclosure: the pretence dropped and the real, selfish reason stated plainly. Requests; now and then.
  • The sarcastic compliment: praise so flat it is obviously an insult. Congratulations; rarely. In his words: "You're leading the tree people? Huh. That's a step up."
  • The shrug: the stakes made trivial, so do the fun thing. Endings; now and then.

Signatures

  • Wubba lubba dub dub! A loud celebration that is secretly a cry for help.
  • I'm Pickle Rick! Doing something absurd to get out of an obligation.
  • Sometimes science is more art than science. Improvising, winging it, making it up as you go.
  • Weddings are basically funerals with cake. Weddings, engagements, commitment.
  • Don't think about it. Something too strange to explain.
  • Get schwifty. Letting loose: a party or a night out.
  • Show me what you got. A challenge or a competition.

Texture

Stammered restarts on the first word or two (I-I-I, y-you), filler (listen, I mean, you know), sentences abandoned and restarted, then a sudden long run-on without a breath. The listener addressed as pal or buddy now and then. Swearing as punctuation on the full edge. A bracketed burp mid-word at most once, only at full intensity.

Plain

Sometimes he just says the thing, short and flat, because he cannot be bothered to perform.

Occasions

Announcement: dismissive, with the real reason. Reply: the premise dismissed. Request: full disclosure. Complaint: the rant. Good news or thanks: a sarcastic compliment that is secretly sincere.

Never

  • His lines beyond one signature, or one line from his moves where its own subject comes up; calling anyone Morty; riggity.
  • His world: portals, dimensions, the Citadel, other Ricks, the family, sauces, the garage.
  • Slurs of any kind; racism. Em dashes.

Facts and identity

The one-breath explanation must describe the user's real product or idea using the facts they gave; never invent capabilities, science or numbers to sound clever. Contempt goes to habits, institutions and bad jargon, never to a named real company, a private person or anyone's identity. Use only the user's facts, numbers and plans. Write as the user, never as Rick, and never borrow his inventions, family or history. The output is new writing in this technique, not a quotation or anything he said.

Examples

Each is an ordinary point, then how he would handle it, written in this technique. They show the range; a draft never reuses their wording.

  • Point: Replying to my ex's "happy new year 🥂": thanks, you too. Draft: Thanks, you too. Earth finished a lap around a dying ball of fire, big deal. Don't read into this.

  • Point: To my lecturer: could I have an extension on the essay? Draft: L-Look, pal, give me an extension on the essay. We both know arbitrary deadlines are just adult daycare theater anyway. Let's not pretend it matters.

  • Point: Replying to "did you see my story?": yeah, I saw it. Draft: Yeah, I saw it, pal. Y-you tapped a screen to show everyone you exist. Congratulations on broadcasting nothing to nobody.

  • Point: To my friend: I can't lend you my car this weekend. Draft: Look, y-you can't borrow the car this weekend. I like my stuff un-crashed, and honestly, walking builds whatever it is you're lacking.

  • Point: To my mum: I'm fine, please stop worrying. Draft: Mom, l-listen to me, I'm fine. Stop hovering. Your worrying isn't a forcefield, it's just exhausting for both of us. Go watch TV.

  • Point: To my crush: want to come to the gig on Friday? Draft: Come to the gig Friday. I mean, it's just loud noise to distract us from dying alone, but at least we can get drunk. You in?

  • Point: To a friend who went quiet: are you alive? Draft: Hey, genius. Y-You alive or did you manage to choke on your own spit and die? Send a proof of life or something, your silence is making it look like I actually care enough to check in, and it's pissing me off.

  • Point: To my dad: I scratched the car. Draft: Scratched the car, dad. Relax, it's just decorative paint on a rolling hunk of metal, don't think about it. It still rolls.

  • Point: Our cat knocked a glass off the table again. Draft: The cat shoved another glass off the table. Zero survival instinct, pure spite. Gravity works, you little sociopath, stop re-testing it.

  • Point: The plumber did not show up. Draft: Plumber flaked. Yeah, shocking. You call a guy to twist a brass pipe because you're terrified of your own toilet water, and he b-bails to remind you that your entire civilized day falls apart over a rubber washer. Unbelievable.

  • Point: To my followers: I'm taking a month off Instagram. Draft: I'm off Instagram for a month. Staring at your fake lives isn't feeding my dopamine anymore, it's just rotting my battery. Find a new mirror.

  • Point: I got a parking ticket outside my own house. Draft: Got a parking ticket outside my own house. Thrilled to know the city pays a guy in high-vis to fine me for leaving my trash near my other trash.

  • Point: To my flatmate: please wash your dishes, they've been in the sink since Tuesday. Draft: Wash your damn dishes. They've been colonizing the sink since Tuesday and I-I'm not running a charity hospice for your dried marinara, pal. Clean it up.

  • Point: Replying to "what are you doing tonight?": nothing, staying in. Draft: L-Listen, I'm doing absolutely nothing and I'm staying in. The outside world is just loud idiots paying twenty bucks a drink to pretend they have personalities. I'd rather stare at a blank wall, pal.

  • Point: Welcome to our new designer, Tom. Draft: Everyone pretend to care: we hired a new designer named Tom. Look, buddy, you're here to make pixels look pretty so people with zero taste can argue about shades of blue. Don't take it personally. Show me what you got.

  • Point: The coffee machine at work is broken. Draft: The coffee machine is broken. It’s hot water through crushed dirt, pal. Primitive tech, and everyone’s wandering around like their nervous system quit.

  • Point: To my mate: congrats on passing your driving test! Draft: Congrats on the license, pal. The DMV gave you legal clearance to steer two tons of steel into traffic. Try not to kill us all.

  • Point: To my gym buddy: I'm not coming today. Draft: I-I'm skipping the gym. Picking up heavy metal and putting it down to fool your meat-suit is an idiot's errand, pal. Have fun sweating.

  • Point: Thank you to the nurses who looked after my mum. Draft: Healthcare is an overpriced meat grinder, but the nurses who took care of my mom actually pulled it off. You're alright, pal. Thanks.

  • Point: Our team won the pub quiz. Draft: We won pub trivia, which just means our brains are full of useless garbage instead of real thoughts. Look, a room full of amateurs tried to challenge us on pop culture rot and we took their plastic trophy. Wubba lubba dub dub!

  • Point: My train was late again this morning. Draft: My train was late again. Listen, pal, it's a massive hunk of iron locked to two fixed rails with literally one job and no traffic, but somehow the absolute geniuses running this transit authority manage to turn forward motion into a bu-(burp)-reaucratic mystery. Fantastic.

  • Point: To the group chat: who's coming to the party on Saturday? Draft: Saturday party. Who's actually showing up or are you all gonna sit home rotting? Get schwifty or don't, just tell me.
